New trucking company leads for insurance agents
A carrier that has just registered with the FMCSA has a policy decision ahead of it. The census file tells you which new carriers run for hire, which haul hazmat and how many trucks they reported, so the first call goes to the right agent.
Counts refreshed October 29, 2026 from the live file.
How insurance agents use the file
Work registrations by date
Pull the last seven days every Monday with the Registered since filter. A carrier that registered last week has not had the same number of quotes as one that registered in the spring.
Quote the right limits
49 CFR 387.9 sets $750,000 as the minimum for for-hire carriers of nonhazardous property in vehicles of 10,001 pounds or more in interstate commerce, and $1,000,000 or $5,000,000 for listed hazardous materials. The For hire and Hazmat columns show which tier a new carrier is in.
Split by state license
Filter by state to match the states your agency is licensed in, then by fleet size to route single-truck owner-operators and small fleets to different producers.
A worked example
- Open the trucking workspace in your account and choose Registered in the last 30 days. Today that returns 11,218 carriers across every state.
- Turn on For hire only. 73% of the carriers in the file registered as authorized for hire, so expect about 8,237 of the 30-day group (an estimate).
- Pick the state your agency is licensed in and set Has to Phone, so every row can be called after the scrub.
- Run a second pull with Hazmat on. 12,225 carriers in the file marked hazardous materials, the group that needs the $1,000,000 or $5,000,000 tiers.
- Download the CSV, scrub it against the National Do Not Call Registry and your own list, and call in registration order.
The first message
A first call or letter that names the carrier's USDOT number and registration date shows you looked the carrier up. Ask what it plans to haul and where before you quote: the Cargo and Operation columns give you the starting point, and the carrier fills in the rest. Keep the first call short and leave a way to reach you.

What the file does not tell you
The census file does not say whether a carrier already bought a policy, which insurer it uses or when coverage starts. It shows what the carrier reported at registration.
Compliance
Most new carriers are owner-operators whose registration phone is a personal mobile. Scrub against the National Do Not Call Registry and your own do-not-call list before any sales call, and do not use autodialers, prerecorded or AI voices, or texts without consent. Public records are not consent to be called. This is not legal advice. Terms of use.
