Short-term rental registers are public in more places than most people expect. PermitPulse draws on registers in 26 states, 39 of them named below, as of 2026-10-08. Two states license short-term rentals statewide (Florida and Wisconsin), Texas covers them through its statewide hotel occupancy tax roll, and everywhere else the register belongs to a city or county.
This is the list of the registers behind the data, state by state, with the record count for each and whether it publishes contact details. It is a reference for anyone deciding where permit data can work for them, and a map of where it cannot.
Three kinds of register
- Statewide licenses. Florida's DBPR vacation-rental licenses and Wisconsin's DATCP tourist rooming house licenses cover every town in the state in one file, and both publish the licensee's phone on most records.
- Statewide tax rolls. Texas has no statewide short-term-rental license, but its hotel occupancy tax applies to rented houses and condos as well as hotels, so the permit roll lists rentals across the state, alongside hotels. It publishes no phone or email.
- City and county programs. Nashville, New Orleans, San Diego, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Scottsdale, Asheville and many more keep their own registers. What they publish varies from full contact details to an address and a permit number.

States without a named register here
South Carolina (1,716 records) draws on published short-term-rental datasets rather than one named register. States with fewer records than a full page are listed on the coverage hub.
Idaho and Iowa
There is nothing to list for Idaho or Iowa. Both states preempted local short-term-rental permitting, so the city registers other states publish do not exist there. The Idaho and Iowa guide explains the laws.
Phone and email coverage depends entirely on the register. Statewide, the files with the most contact detail are:
| State | Records | With phone or email |
| Florida | 52,029 | 38,719 (74%) |
| Louisiana | 33,991 | 29,289 (86%) |
| California | 21,147 | 17,906 (85%) |
| Wisconsin | 12,919 | 12,611 (98%) |
| Arizona | 4,661 | 3,948 (85%) |
| Kentucky | 3,977 | 2,487 (63%) |
| Ohio | 1,923 | 1,881 (98%) |
| Georgia | 2,125 | 1,493 (70%) |
| Michigan | 1,479 | 1,147 (78%) |
| Minnesota | 1,578 | 934 (59%) |
Where the register publishes no contact detail, every record still has the property address, and most have the name on the permit. That is enough for direct mail or a skip-trace.
How the registers change
Registers are living files. Cities add programs, change what they publish and drop old fields. PermitPulse re-reads the registers continuously, which is why counts on this site refresh with every build. Some registers are young: Chicago's, Louisville's and Columbus's records are mostly dated within the last two years.
Using a register yourself
Many of these registers are published on city, county or state open-data portals. Doing it yourself means handling each format, merging city spellings, separating rentals from hotels where a tax roll mixes them, and refreshing the pull as the register changes. PermitPulse does that for every register above and sells the result by state: $99 a month for one state or $299 for all of them, or a one-time file from $149.
Each register PermitPulse reads has its own live page, with record counts, the fields it publishes, status and permit-type mixes and new records by month: see all public short-term rental registers. The combined counts are in the permit statistics study.
